There is No Dignity Left Here
December 27th 2007 12:57
There's a common sentiment that defies all political allegiances which many refuse to see in each other. At its most basic it can be described as good intentions for the country. I know there’s a popular saying that ‘the road to hell is paved with good intentions’, but I don’t find that to be true. The road to heaven is paved with good intentions, the road to hell however is paved with ill intent disguised as good intentions meant only to serve oneself.
In effect the common sentiment has been dissolved into a nothingness, who is good and who is bad? It never was a debate between the left and right, it was always a debate between those who believe freedom is a luxury and those who believe freedom is a necessity. Unfortunately there is no political party or ideology left that has not been corrupted by the desire to serve only its own interests.
When times where tough, when the elected government was beginning to show that it did not care for freedom but rather fulfilling its own agendas people started protesting. Of course when I say people I don’t mean people in a general sense, you can only be sure of one thing during times where the government is corrupt beyond all reason. That is, the people who protest will be those who have the least to lose and the most energy to spare. Unfortunately this can rub off negatively, as protestors will often be students, hippies and the poor. However if history has any say in it, as it already has said in Venezuela, in Vietnam war-era America, the poor and the weak are all you need to make change happen.
We live in a time where freedom is no longer threatened, it actually does not exist. Sure, we may be free to say things, free to do things, but when your government has the right to take you away with no trial your freedom ceases to exist. It isn’t freedom that allows an American to read what I’m writing now, it’s the good will of the American government, specifically the Commander in Chief, for allowing this blog to show in the United States.
Who is left to protest now? Who is left amongst us with the desire to protest for freedom? No one. Absolutely no one, you look out and you don’t see anyone who is willing to act for freedom. What you see are those desperate to kill the political enemy in some way shape or form, damn any desires for freedom. One of the more popular new antics employed by students, who would otherwise have gone out and protested the war back during the Vietnam era, is spam.
Ron Paul spam to be specific, the ‘strict constitutionalist’ the man who can somehow love freedom and liberty, call himself a libertarian, yet defend the state of Texas for banning sodomy and claiming it has a right to set laws as according to ‘its own local standards’. Ron Paul is not a beacon of freedom, the only thing he represents is what George Bush hates, smaller government, withdrawal from Iraq, total reversal of any constitution defying laws such as the patriot act.
On paper it sounds great, unfortunately in practice there’s more to Ron Paul than meets the eye. He says he follows the constitution word for word, and unfortunately that’s a problem. Because of his strict following he believes the state government can ignore the Bill of Rights, that churches should be made immune to both the federal and supreme courts, that any state government can legislate literally anything, even if it defies the Bill of Rights since only the federal government must adhere to one of the most fundamentally important things in a free country.
Those who protested during the Vietnam era protested the government and what the government stands for. Those who protest now only protest the government, it’s not a fight for freedom, it’s a fight to either impeach George Bush or turn his legacy into a ink stain for the history books. Freedom be damned, follow the constitution right down to the letter, let the government take away all the god given rights people are entitled to, so long as it’s the state government of course.
In the same way conservatives have dumped all their conservative principles to better align themselves with a heartless and idiotic man liberals have dumped all their principles to align themselves with a ‘libertarian’ who is no more than a religious fundamentalist in disguise. Both sides claim they’re working with the best of intentions, yet in reality both sides have ill intent and to mask that ill intent they have convinced themselves they’re doing good.
One side claims to be fighting terrorists trying to take away our freedoms, the other side claims the government is taking away our freedoms. We can be sure of only one thing if either side wins, that is freedoms will be lost. Either at a federal or state level, arguing over which is better to lose freedoms to is arguing semantics.
We live in dark times, not because there is a government which has been hijacked by political extremists but because there is no one left to fight this extremism. There’s nothing noble about fighting to take down one form of extremist government only to create your own similarly extreme government in its place.
