The Most Noble Candidate Running For US President
December 17th 2007 10:07
My opinions often time are skewed away from popular opinion, I do my best to try and look at every issue in the most neutral of ways. To that end I do not judge the most noble candidate to be the candidate who agrees with me best, however the most noble candidate in the sense the most honest and straight forward one.
Some people may argue Mitt Romney or Mike Huckabee with their religious sentiments, some might argue Barack Obama, Ron Paul or Dennis Kuccinich with their pro-liberty ideals. However, the problem with considering these people is that we are looking at their policies, not their character.
I believe Senator John McCain is the most noble hearted of all the candidates running. Unlike the other candidates his policies are purely built around good intention, he firmly has the good of the United States at heart and is willing to put himself in the firing line to get his views out. He has been on left leaning TV programs including 'The Daily Show', he has been to Iraq perhaps more than any other candidate and he has been consistent on his desire to make America a better place.
Contrast that with Barack Obama who is young and ambitious, his ideals while more conforming to my own are tainted in the sense he's young and driven, not pure of heart. Or Mike Huckabee and Mitt Romney who treat their religous views as toys to manipulate voters. They say 'I'm Christian like you, so vote for me', as opposed to John McCain who says that he's been with the troops, he's heard from the troops, and repeats what the troops have to say. He does not exploit his campaign crutch, rather he represents it.
Then there's fringe candidates raising a lot of money, people like Ron Paul. The problem with Ron Paul is that he has this theory he wants to test. Ron Paul wants to bring his libertarian ideals mixed with some religion and a healthy dose of oil into politics, he wants to take away federal rights over people but wants state governments to literally own people, he wants to help oil companies while ignoring peoples welfare. He hides his disdain for homosexuals while simultaneously taking money from them in campaign dollars, by doing so he's essentially short changing people, they're voting for a candidate they don't fully understand, a candidate who has so far managed to dodge the tougher questions.
The biggest 'mistake' John McCain has committed is that he has chosen to be optimistic about Iraq. He has acknowledged there are serious problems in that part of the world but unlike other candidates he wants to solve the problem. He's tackling this core issue surrounding the 2008 elections head on and unabashedly, no funny business, no cutting and running, no repeat Bush Admin type policies. There's a problem there and he wants to come up with a long term solution. Simply because of this he's been made out to be a terrible choice for president. Perhaps he is, perhaps his policies are flawed, however he certainly has the proudest record for serving his country of any candidate and he has been the most straightforward about his views. For that he is without a doubt the most noble hearted candidate running in the elections.
