Talking To Hamas (Instead of Killing People) Makes You a Bigot

April 25th 2008 13:04
Big surprise, Jimmy Carter has now been labelled a 'bigot' by Israel's Ambassador to the UN for (of all things) *gasp* *shock* *horror* talking to Hamas rather than pouring a good three billion into Israels war machine.

Israel's ambassador to the United Nations on Thursday called former President Jimmy Carter "a bigot" for meeting with the leader of the militant Hamas movement in Syria.

Carter, a Nobel Peace Prize winner, "went to the region with soiled hands and came back with bloody hands after shaking the hand of Khaled Mashaal, the leader of Hamas," Ambassador Dan Gillerman told a luncheon briefing for reporters.

The diplomat was questioned about problems facing his country during a wide-ranging discussion with reporters lasting more than an hour. The briefing was sponsored by The Israel Project, a Washington-based, media-oriented advocacy group.

The ambassador's harsh words for Carter came days after the ex-president met with Mashaal for seven hours in Damascus to negotiate a cease-fire with Gaza's Hamas rulers. Carter then called Mashaal on Monday to try to get him to agree to a one-month truce without conditions, but the Hamas leader rejected the idea.

Israel's UN ambassador calls Jimmy Carter 'a bigot'

I think if people talked more like Jimmy Carter and less like our lovely Israeli Ambassador to the UN the world would be a lot more peaceful.

Yeah, don't you love it when some Americans complain that Carter is making them look bad? No, trust me guys, it isn't him...

I just read in BBC News that Hamas has offered a six month truce.

Really Long Link

So his trip can't have been a total waste of time.

As an American, I find this terribly embarrassing and troubling. My God, since when did we decide that diplomacy made us weak??

And, if I'm not mistaken...refusing to talk to someone based on their affiliations makes you more of a bigot than what Carter is doing.

It saddens me to say this, but America has been turning into such a fearful, trigger happy Country, I do not blame other nations for distrusting us.

I hope that the outcome of the upcoming election yeilds results that will get us back on track to being a place I can be proud to call home.

THis is just war talk.
It happen all the time.
Part of the with us or against us mentality.
20 years ago any criticism of Israeli policy was automatically called anti-semitism. over the years that sort of rhetoric has become less ineffective.

Carter has already proven himself to be an anti-Semite. Why would Israel trust anything he said about a "truce?" Would you want someone who was well known for hating you to negotiate a "peace" between you and someone else who hates you?

I would like to know how this makes him a bigot?

but then, I guess that's why I'm the journalist and he (Israeli Ambassador) is the puppet zionist propaganda machine. Best to stick to our defined roles.

After his visit Hamas declared it would actually recognize Israel, say what you want but they publically said they would support a two state solution. Ask the lovely Israeli Ambassador if he supports a two state solution and ask him how he would go about implementing it, then you'll see a bigot.

I find these days whoever is labeled 'anti-semetic' tends to really just be criticizing Israels actions, it has gotten so bad Carter isn't even criticize Israel but got labeled abigot. Something tells me the Israeli government does not want Hammas to be talking with high profile types especially when they start sayiing such things like 'we will recognize Israel'.

It's literally 'I've tried evertyhing except talking with them...'. Israels own blundering incompetance from a diplomatic standpoint is no accident.

Ahmed, I think Hamas said they would be willing to live alongside Israel in a two-state solution but stopped short of actually formally recognising Israel. But you know, one step at a time.

Interestingly Israel is refusing Hamas's offer of a truce.
Really Long Link

I don't get it. Israel complains about Hamas rockets and demands Hamas stop attacking Israelis and when Hamas agrees to these demands, Israel refuses to play along.

What does Israel want exactly? Am I been too cynical when I say it appears to me that Israel needs Hamas to launch annoying but ultimately ineffective attacks on Israel to justify Israel's continued oppression of the Palestinian population and its never ending settlement of the Occupied Territories?

Israel just wants to make Hammas look bad, if saying 'gee why don't they stop their attacks?' is one then they'll say it, now that Hammas says they will if Israel does the same Israel is retreating to the 'well they're probably fibbing in some way'.

In the end it's all rhetoric.

Thank you, Ahmed, for risking irate replies, in order to make the point...

..A nice, simple point : Talking is better than killing.

Amen to that

ive never read anything Jimmy Carter said that shows hes an anti-semite . . . is there any proof of this?

criticising Israel does not equate to anti-semitism

i see no reason not to trust Jimmy Carter if he helps make it peaceful for all involved

Jimmy Carter is most certainly not anti-Semitic. Like Harry Truman before him, he was a big champion of Israel...then, like Truman, he recoiled in horror when he saw just how brutal Israel's policies towards the Palestinians really are. Truman called Israel an underdog that had gone "haywire". Carter calls Israel an Apartheid State -well it does have Jew-only roads after all): Really Long Link

Unfortunately calling someone who criticises Israeli policy an "anti-Semite" is not completely ineffective. I think most of the world can see the difference, but apparently in some circles, the word "Jew" is still interchangeable with the word "Israeli".

How come no one on this site is talking about Hamas' constant barrage of rockets on Israel or the kidnapping of Gilad Shalit? While Israel's actions are not perfect, a little more balance on this topic is needed. And while criticizing Israel's policies and being anti-Semitic are not one and the same, let's be honest and recognize that both exist in the above comments.

Haha, Hamas has been offering a truce for some time now! This isn't anything new, however, to call Carter a bigot is just comical.

The Israeli government need the ongoing attacks from Hamas in order to justify their ruthless genocide against Palestinian people. No wonder they seem so uninterested when peace is offered, while they can achieve their goals militarily in a more "quick and efficient" way.
