My Sympathies Are Not Politically Biased Thank You Very Much
December 19th 2007 16:52
It is with great disdain that I must write this, there are now too many political extremists to simply be ignored, their views are suddenly legitimate and recieve wide spread media coverage. This blog post is as sad as debating over the merits of torture, whatever happened to the days we debated over tax reforms and blow jobs?
Sadness pain and suffering is something that is not in short supply in this great big planet of ours. Indeed most of it is uneccesary yet we must accept it and hope the old adage 'it's always darkest before the dawn' holds true. Yet at the current state of the world the question must be asked, how much darker is it going to get? While we await the dawn, should it ever come, we have to begin asking ourselves if we're losing any part of our humanity during these dark times?
I do not believe there is an absoloute definition of good or evil, as humans we are not sophisticated enough to comprehend what is evil and what is not. We cannot know what goes on in the mind of a person and as such we can never know if someone is absoloute evil. As humans however we have one similar traight, we can sympathise for people we do not know and that shows that we are at the very least inherintly good.
Unfortunately some have exploited one of our most basic and important instinct to further their own ends. I think it is important to realize that when we suffer we feel better knowing others are thinking about us. It's a natural instinct we are given, the weight of the world can be but a feather when you have the emotional support of people. Exploiting this great power we have is nothing short of abusing one of the most important traits we as people have.
The advantage is we are not limited, as people, to extend our sympathies to a select few group of people. It is something we possess in infinte quantity, our sympathy is never ending. When someone is in trouble, distress or disaster we can help them simply by letting them know we're there for them in spirit. This is a power we have for our fellow man we do not use enough. A smile can mean the world to someone who is at the low point of his or her life and yet it is only a smile. What effort does it take?
So it really breaks my heart when someone starts politicising the whole matter and claims that we can only feel for such and such person or group. I do not understand it, why should I only feel for American soldiers in Iraq? Why can I not feel sorry for the women and children who suffer during this time of war? I assure you my sympathies are not limited, my heart goes out to the men and women serving their country as much as the men women and children in a warzone. I cannot comprehend that my feelings towards one group can effect my feelings towards the other. Perhaps this is something many people can't understand because of their allegances to either side of the war.
Unfortunately there are soldiers who are less than comendable, as there are civilians who do not deserve any sort of sympathy. Yet by and large who suffers are the majority of people. I feel for the soldiers in Iraq, Afghanistan and wherever else they might be, I do not think they are a collectively evil force but I do concede some of them are. Much like I feel for the civilians in times of war, I cannot simply assume they are all angels but I can surely feel for them when they are living in sorrow.
One of the greatest crimes comitted by those who have decided that our ability to feel for other people is in finite supply is that they've forgotten that those they hate are human just like them, and they are not all evil and at best a tiny fraction of them may be. So support the troops and support the people, why limit yourself to one or the other when we can help both sides?

Nicely said, and my sympathies go out to all who suffer without having given their consent, to do so.
